American University’s Stephen Lumpkins signs with PPSM
April 24, 2013 – Pro Partner Sports Management is pleased to announce the signing of American University forward Stephen Lumpkins. As a senior, Lumpkins led AU and was sixth in the Patriot League with 14.2 points per game and was second in the conference with 9.4 rebounds per game. This season he eclipsed the 1,000 career point-mark at AU and finished in the top-20 on the school’s all-time scoring list. He is also one of just seven Eagles to grab 800 rebounds in his career and stands as the school’s all-time leading shot-blocker.
The Redwood City, CA native has certainly taken a unique path to this point in his career. Following his junior season on the hardwood at American, things changed for Lumpkins as he was selected in the 13th round of the MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals after attending an open tryout. The 6’8″ left-hander stunned scouts when he was clocked with a fastball at 90+ mph on the radar gun and it appeared that his focus may be shifting to the diamond. After a year and a half of minor league ball though, Lumpkins was drawn back to his true love of basketball and returned to American University for his senior season – a standout year that saw him named to All-Patriot League Team and NABC All-District Team.
“Stephen has the potential to be a really good pro and make money playing this game.” says PPSM agent Frank Catapano, “We’ve had him training up here in Boston and I’ve seen some inside/outside versatility in his game that he didn’t get a chance to show at American – I think he translates well at the next level. Tough, smart, plays hard. Stephen’s a quality young man too and we’re looking forward to working with him.”
