PPSM’s Nerlens Noel Selected in 2013 NBA Draft
June 27, 2013 — Pro Partner Sports Management client Nerlens Noel was selected sixth overall in the 2013 NBA Draft minutes ago by the New Orleans Pelicans. The 6’11” Everett, MA native who spent one season at the University of Kentucky led the NCAA in blocked shots last season at more than 4.4 blocks per game and will bring an immediate defensive presence to a New Orleans squad looking to rebound from a difficult 27-55 season under head coach Monty Williams and alongside fellow-Wildcat Anthony Davis.
Despite suffering a season-ending ACL injury in February, Noel ranks 2nd all time in UK history in blocked shots in a single season and was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, SEC Freshman of the Year, and to the AP All-SEC 1st Team. The freshman superstar astounded Kentucky fans in his time with the program with his athleticism and shot-blocking ability, breaking the school record with a 12-block performance over Ole Miss (tied for 4th most in a single-game in BCS history). On the day he announced his departure for the NBA, Noel expressed, “I’ve learned so much here at UK and am thankful for Coach (John) Calipari, the staff and my teammates for all of their support. I especially appreciate the Big Blue Nation and all of the support, prayers and well-wishes I’ve received from them during my rehab and decision-making process.”
Pro Partner Sports lead NBA agent Frank Catapano said from alongside Noel, “Nerlens has potential to be a great player in this league. He’s smart, works hard, and is completely focused on the next stage in his career and his life. The fans of New Orleans and the Pelicans organization are getting a special young man.”
