Janning officially returns to Siena

December 27, 2013

Only six months ago the confetti fell down upon Matt Janning and Montepaschi Siena as they hoisted the trophy after defeating Virtus Roma for a seventh-straight SerieA championship.  The celebration was on.  Now, Janning will return to the green and white, albeit with a different supporting cast and attempt to defend his title.  Coach Luca Banchi and longtime Siena stalwarts David Moss and Daniel Hackett have all departed for Milan raising the stakes and changing the competitive landscape of Italian basketball.  Janning knew there was nowhere else he’d rather be though, tweeting out this morning “Ready to get back to Siena.  #ForzaMensSana”.

Janning arrived on a flight into Bologna today after spending the first half of the season with Croatian champion KK Cibona Zagreb.  The Northeastern University product averaged 11.4 ppg, 3.0 rpg, and 2.7 apg while shooting 53% from the field and almost 38% from three-point territory for Cibona, leading the club to a top-4 position in the competitive Adriatic League.  In Siena, Janning will be reunited for the third season of his career with Coach Marco Crespi who brought Matt to Europe as a rookie in Casale Monferrato and was promoted this summer from assistant to head coach upon Banchi’s departure.  Under the coaching duo last season, Janning was one of the top three-point shooters in the Euroleague at 48% and led the Italian SerieA in free-throw shooting.

In addition to defending its SerieA championship, Siena is seeking its sixth-consecutive Coppa Italia title after last season’s thrilling victory over Cimberio Varese.  The club also joins a talented EuroCup grouping that includes the Israeli champion Maccabi Haifa, Russian powerhouse Khimky Moscow, and 10-time defending Czech champion CEZ Nymburk. The road will not be easy for a young Siena squad with new faces in the lineup, but it’s a challenge that Janning welcomes.  “It’s exciting to have an opportunity to return to Siena and build upon all the great success we had here last season with Coach Crespi, Tomas (Ress), Ben (Ortner)”, said Matt, “I’m just looking forward to getting back out there in front of these fans and helping us win games.”
